Step back in time to 1906 San Francisco, when the earthquake and fire happened. The house on this lot, built by the Figoni Family in late 1800s, was destroyed, as was true of much of what's now known as Telegraph Hill. In 1906-1907, the Figoni's rebuilt the house, then constructed an additional structure on the rear of the lot that their grandson, Mel Figoni, described to the current owner as sleeping quarters with privies nailed to the side of the building. His grandparents rented the two rooms to workers who helped to rebuild San Francisco. Over time, the structures have undergone various transformations and since 1988, when the current owner purchased the property, has been lived in as a house plus a studio apartment. Two decks connect both levels of the front and rear buildings, with the primary bedroom of the front building located on the top floor of the rear building. The lower level of the rear structure is a studio apartment. The living spaces are all above a large, 2-car tandem garage and an expansive storage area. History buffs will recognize Mel Figoni's name as the longtime owner of Figoni Hardware on Grant Street, which began as Capurro Hardware in 1907 became Figoni & Fiori Hardware in 1915, then became Figoni Hardware in 1924.
